"Reflections of a Queen"

After looking through tons of art works this image "Reflections of a Queen" by A. Smith, caught my eye. This work of art is simple yet intricate at the same time. The use of the colors in the water is beautiful. This picture really says so much about the ones personal mind set and how we may perceive ourselves to be.
What does this painting remind you of? When looking at your reflection what is it you see?

  1. This photo reminds that no matter how much the media and others may perceive African American women I am queen. When looking at my reflection I see an intelligent, dedicated, and kind young woman with a lot to offer the world.

  4. This is a beautiful painting! I think this picture can represent a lot of things. This picture reminds me of the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." She is looking at a reflection of her beauty. When I look at my reflection, I see the same thing. I see a person with a bubbly and bright personality, who always wants to remain happy. I, also, see a young woman still growing and maturing. I see someone who wants to make the best of life, and is still learning to manage different situations that come her way.

  5. This is a beautiful painting, something my mom would really like (she collects black art). When I look at this painting I see what the Europeans tried to strip away from the Africans when they first arrived. She is looking into the water to see, that even when she is bare she still holds the heart of a queen.

That’s kind of how we all look at ourselves; no matter what we go through we can look at our reflections and see who we truly are. When I look at my reflection I see a strong, intelligent, and amazing woman that is not easily broken.

  6. This is a very beautiful painting. I love it! I would definitely put this in my home. It seems very strong. It makes me think of "Phenomenal Woman."

When I look at my reflection, I see a strong black woman. No matter how messed up my hair is or if I still have sleep in my eye, I still feel beautiful.

  7. My aunt has a picture similar to this in her home office. I think this painting is very beautiful and portrays how every African Amercian woman shopuld think of herself (like a Queen).

When I look at my reflection, I see a man who has come this far in life because of the strong black women that have raised me. I see a man that is determined to be a man of his word and protect these special women, just as my father does.

  8. I am so proud of my fellow rattlers! This blog is great. The art is lovely. The young woman in the picture reminds me much of my sister, who teaches me to love myself and embrace my beauty.

When I look at my reflection, I see a woman who doesn't let the small things in life bother her.

  12. It seems like I've seen this somewhere before. I love my beautiful black women too. I think it's sad when men call them out of their name. I, personally, don't condone it or do it myself, but we all know that we can't control what others say. It's not about what they call you. It's about what you answer to. I would call a black woman nothing less than a beautiful queen.

  14. Loking at this picture and all of its colors, I remember reading something about the meaning of colors. It said blue is the color of calmness, sirenity and spirituality. To me, that resresents to nuturing side of a black woman. Yellow represents wisdom and brightness. As a black woman, I do believe we are wise. The green respresents life, which could mean a lot of things because woman are needed to carry the life of a fetus. This picture has a lot of symbolism. When I look at my reflection, I see all of these qualities because I look like my mom. She represents all of these things to me.

  16. Nice picture. Is this one of the pieces that will be included in the Kinsey Art Exhibit that will be here in September? I would love to see this team post a blog that had something to do with your fictitious events or the beautiful artwork that is coming to our fair city.

This is such a great opportunity to get young people engaged and interested in art by African American artists. Why not share some of the pieces with us that are actually in the Kinsey Collection?

The Kinseys were once students just like you all. They fell in love right here at FAMU, got married, and built a life together. Collecting black art is one of their passions that they both enjoy. This is such a great and fascinating story. I was hoping your blog posts would encourage us to think about art collecting, learn more about noted black artists, learn how to work together to build meaningful lives that celebrate who we are, etc.
