Meet Bernard and Shirley Kinsey!

Before the Kinsey's bring their collection of African-American art to The Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, we would like for you to get a better understanding of who they really are.

After watching this video, do you think that collectors like the Kinsey's are important to the African-American community? Explain your answer.

  1. The Kinseys are very important to the African American community! It is because of people like the Kinseys that some may even want to explore their history. Any other time, people may only learn their history because they have to get a grade for it in school. The Kinseys show a new way to learn about history. Personally, I find their way more interesting than just reading a history book because I'm more hands on and visual! However, I do understand the importance of reading history books because they provide valuable information.

  2. I agree with Joy above! this type of preservation of our history is very important to african americans. what i have realized is that it is not enough to just vaguely know what country you come from or maybe your ancestors names but rather to have physical artifacts from their existence.

  3. I think that it is important that African Americans pay closer attention to their history by collecting items from their family history. Its important that people realize that it starts with the family as well, letting your children know where they come from and providing example not only through stories but from family treasures. This type of physical history is invaluable in my opinion.

  4. I believe that the Kinseys are important to the African American community as well. They open other African Americans eyes to want to collect more African American art and to explore their history. It is also very good to have African American art in your home for your children to be exposed to. I know when I was little, thats all my mother had on the walls.

  5. Well, my old antiquated computer would not allow me to view the video you have posted, but I must way that I have met Bernard and Shirley Kinsey and they are an absolutely lovely couple. They represent so much of that which is good in the African American community. They have built a life together and have continued to consistently give back to their alma mater, and to other initiatives to help black Americans. Their love for art is a testament to their devotion to recognizing beauty in the African and African American esthetic. I cannot wait for their exhibit to arrive at the Brogan. I truly hope FAMU students will take adavantage of this opportunity to learn from these two outstanding individuals.
